How is the human hand similar to and different from the hands of other primates? We humans like many other primates can grasp things with our hands and fingers. Many primates such as gibbons, chimps, and spider monkeys can grasp with their feet as well, which we humans are not able to do. We are able to coordinate with our fingers and do many different actions with them. This is possible because we have fully opposable thumbs, which allows us in many ways to have a strong grasp. Other primates also share some of these many grasps.
Human hands are shorter and broader than other primates. Our thumbs are longer, stronger, and more flexible. The structure of our hands allows room for additional muscle attachment, this allows a more flexible and precise grip. |
